Don't worry! He's not dead.
There are many unsung heroes whose work is done primarily behind the scenes. They might not be as vocal or as exposed as the better known faces, but they still do a lot of the legwork. What makes Neville remarkable in this respect is that he's always visible, yet you wouldn't necessarily know it. It's an old football adage that a good referee isn't noticeable; Neville is a chess arbiter and one of the best around.
I first came across Neville in 1997 at the London Under 10s. He then lived on the other side of the Bucks/Herts border. I encountered him at many tournaments over the next few years, but I only really got to know him when he moved to Holmer Green during my mid-teens. It's very useful having someone at your club who's au fait with the latest developments in the chess world, not least regarding any amendments to rules. His presence at Wycombe & Hazlemere was always a pleasure and I'm sure it's the same now at Bourne End, following another change of location.
Neville is a shy, unassuming character but one who's always happy to chat. I imagine this article will embarrass him greatly, but that's simply a reflection of the modest chap that he is. Arbiters generally receive little recompense for their services and it's only right that they are thanked like this at least occasionally. While I still lived in South Bucks, Neville gave me countless lifts to and from various wastelands, including Leamington Spa, Telford and Great Yarmouth. He's opened doors for me and many others through his incessant provision of knowledge and generosity. You wouldn't be reading this if Neville hadn't suggested I contact the esteemed editor of this wonderful newspaper with the view to starting a column.
So thank you, Neville. I think everyone in British chess would echo my sentiments.
It's fitting that a correction I have to make to the 'Numbers' column of February 1 was pointed out to me by Mr. Belinfante himself. Paul Georghiou of Chesham has, to the best of my knowledge, not played in the Bucks League of late. Nor has he represented the county. However, simply because he hasn't represented another county in recent years, his eligibility is of no doubt. Paul has an ECF rating of 213 which places him 82nd= in the country and quite some distance ahead of the next best players in Bucks.
There'll be something new every Wednesday, with bits and pieces thrown in on other days when I can. I encourage anyone to send me queries, games, reports and photos to makepeacewithchess@gmail.com. You can also follow me on twitter @buckschess.
