Mohammed Patwary, 28, of Bridle Gate, High Wycombe was sentenced at Aylesbury Crown Court on Friday to 24 months in prison and has been placed on the sex offenders register for ten years.
He was sentenced for sexually assaulting a 20-year-old woman as she was walking through All Saints churchyard in High Wycombe town centre at about 3.50am on June 26.
A key witness came forward after she saw a witness appeal regarding the incident in the Bucks Free Press, police said.
DC Tim Robins, investigating the incident, said: “This sentence is as a result of a lengthy investigation, and I would like to thank the media and the public for helping us with our enquiries.
“Incidents like this are particularly distressing for the victim and can cause concern within the community but I would like to reassure you that they are rare and High Wycombe remains a safe place to live, work and visit.”
