A DAD from Bourne End has been selected to carry the Olympic Torch for a 400 metre stretch this summer. Dominic John, 46, was nominated for the London 2012 honour by a sports governing body after his work as the founder of TeamedUp. The scheme raises funds for hard-up athletes by giving ordinary people the chance to train with them. It has raised £20,000 for 20 elite British athletes this year. Dominic, of Harvest Hill, is set to carry the torch on a stretch somewhere between Oxford and Reading.

A WOOBURN Green artist is exhibiting her ‘dynamic’ range of abstract paintings at Bourne End Library this month. Mary Bate, of Windsor Lane, has converted the attic of her home into a studio where she paints. The former counsellor said of her work: “I am always experimenting and exploring how different materials can be used with paint, which adds to the fascination of creating something new.” The exhibition runs until February 7.

MEMBERS of Glory Mills Bowls Club celebrated the end of 2011 with a quiz and classical music recital.Youth orchestra musican Chihi Zamorano Osorio played pieces by Mozart, Faure and Abreu in a half-hour performance. The Wooburn Green club is always on the lookout for new members, particularly ladies. The £45 membership fee is one of the lowest in Buckinghamshire. VOLUNTEERS who have united to save Flackwell Heath library are holding a meeting this evening to discuss their plans for the service. The Friends of Flackwell Heath Library meet at Christ Church in Chapel Lane at 7.30pm, with face painting and a magic show also put on for children. The village library was one of 14 from which Bucks County Council has withdrawn £700,000 of funding.

RESIDENTS will be asked what they love and hate about living in Flackwell Heath as part of a bid to identify major issues in the village. The Residents’ Association is staging a consultation day event at the community centre on Saturday, January 21 from 10am - 4pm. GOLFERS in Flackwell Heath held a successful annual charity day - announcing a total fundraising figure of £1,465 for last year. The money was raised by members of Flackwell Heath Golf Club through competition entry fees, a raffle and an auction. The money will go to various youth clubs and schools for children with learning and physical disabilities.

ST PETER’s Church in Loudwater has launched a new club for five to 11-year-olds, running every Sunday morning during term times. From 10.20am - 12.10pm, it will have games, competitions, stories, songs and sports, promising a “safe, caring environment where children learn about the Christian values of unselfishness, honesty, consideration for others”.
