AN historic bell tower is set to return to school in Bourne End after some much-needed restoration work.
The Claytons bell tower has been removed from its Wakeman Road home after 25 years - after being repeatedly vandalised and targeted by scrap metal thieves.
The tower, which no longer has a bell in it, used to belong to the old Claytons School, and was in use from 1896 until 1983.
After years of deliberation over the future of the bell tower, villagers and businesses have managed to raise funds to cover it in a ‘lead lookalike’ fibreglass material.
They plan to install the tower at the new Claytons School in Wendover Road, though further donations are needed.
