A SCHOOL in Amersham is to remain closed to the majority of pupils tomorrow after freak winds damaged the roof.

The start of term has been delayed at Dr Challoner's Grammar School after part of the hall roof was torn off yesterday.

Pupils in Years 11 and 13 who are taking mock exams have been told to attend as normal, but for everyone else it's another day off.

Headmaster Dr Mark Fenton told the Bucks Free Press: "It was fairly significant damage to the roof in question. We were having a meeting on the other side of the site and the sound it was making was absolutely extraordinary.

"We think the wind got under part of the flat roof and flipped it over.

"It took a large proportion off the roof and that's causing us a lot of concern. There's still roofing material loose on the roof and yesterday we had bits landing all over the place."

Work for the rest of the students will be posted on the school's website, www.challoners.com.
