HIGH winds have forced a school in Amersham to close tomorrow after the hall roof was torn off.

Pupils at Dr Challoner's Grammar School will have the day off on Wednesday after gusts of wind caused damage to the roof of the hall.

Headmaster Mark Fenton said: "This morning exceptionally high winds in the Amersham area tore off a large section of the hall block roof. This freak event has left behind several tons of loose roofing material which is at risk of blowing off the roof and causing injury.

"Contractors will be on site tomorrow to clear the debris and make the roof safe. This task will take at least one day."

Year 12 students taking the external ICT exam will be the only ones allowed into school tomorrow.

Dr Fenton added assessments will be made during the course of the day tomorrow and further information about when the school will re-open will be posted on the scholl's website, www.challoners.com.
