I came home yesterday evening to read an article in the news section of this site about the nightclub next to the Oxford Road roundabout closing down.
Tragically in recent months Wycombe has lost some wonderful business such as Hearn's shoe shop and the television shop in Oxford Road.
Its always unfortunate when jobs are lost especially on the run up to the festive season however the latest closure must surely be one of the best things to happen to Wycombe for many years.
Back on the 31st March this year a news article appeared on this site entitled “Man punched to ground after leaving Pure nightclub High Wycombe”.
Before that on 7th January another news article appeared entitled “Man stabbed outside High Wycombe nightclub”.
With such goings on in our town centre is it any wonder so many people prefer to stay indoors after dark?
Do we really need a nightclub in our town with all the trouble associated with such places? After all Wycombe is filled with pubs all of which play music and the recent change in licensing hours has turned most drinking establishments into late night venues?
Every nightclub that opened in our town eventually closed. No doubt many will remember when Wycombe was blighted with Club Eden and Ocean's both of which gained a reputation for trouble.
Some of my friends used to visit the establishment in question and from what they told me about their experiences I am flabbergasted the powers that be did not act to close it down. Thankfully the recession has achieved what the authorities failed to do.
The area surrounding the Oxford Road roundabout is prime retail development space. On one side is the shiny new complex with major High Street shops however opposite was a nightclub with a multitude of promotional banners flapping in the wind.
Let's face those banners were hardly in keeping with the multimillion pound development on the opposite side of the roundabout.
Hopefully the powers that be will refuse any potential buyers from obtaining an entertainments licence and with a bit of luck the very building itself will be demolished and something better constructed there.
Not even my good self with my love of brutalist architecture can find any beauty in that building. I would even go so far as to say the word “eyesore” was invented with that dreadful structure in mind.
These days there are many older people in Wycombe who dare not venture out into the town after dark because of the drunken yobbos who blight our town.
I feel its time to redress the balance and make Wycombe a place that people of all ages want to visit after dark to have a good time.
The closure of this establishment is a small step in the right direction to reclaiming the night time streets for the decent, honest, respectable and upstanding citizens of Wycombe.
What do you think?
