I WAS most impressed by the standard of driving shown by motorists when the snow fell this week. I wish, however, I could say the same for the cyclists who went merrily on their way, weaving dangerously in and out of traffic as if it were a lovely clear summer’s day.
Before I go on, I would like to point out that there are many very good and able cyclists out there, some of whom suffer at the hands of reckless motorists. I make no excuses for that and ask that every car driver realise the danger his vehicle poses, and ask that they show a willingness to share the road with pedal bikes.
Nevertheless, a large number of cyclists do their case no good at all. I was in my car, crawling along and checking I wasn’t going to slide on ice and I was careful not to make any sudden surprise movement. Then a cyclist shot from behind me, zoomed into the middle of the road, cut in again and went happily on his way. Another shot along the pavement, no doubt posing a risk to pedestrians negotiating the streets. I also suspect he may be one of the brigade who sees no need for using lights at night, relying on luck and the diligence of drivers to save him.
There is, of course, an easy answer. I’ve suggested it time and again, and yet nothing ever happens. It is simply to ensure all cyclists have to have licences and undergo basic Highway Code tests before they are allowed out. It can be cheap and it can even be subsidised because it’s surely better to regulate cycling rather than leave it to the fates.
Why oh why then has no one ever listened to me?
