AS YOU may have gathered, I am no great fan of our district councils. I have no Wycombe District Council wallchart in my bedroom, but if one were given to me, I would probably use it as a dartboard after the decision to close Holywell Mead open air swimming pool.
But where WDC and I agree is on the subject of bins. I cannot fault this council’s refuse collections, nor can I fault its logic in refusing to bow to populist demand for weekly pick-ups.
Admittedly, I was among the cynics when the council introduced alternate fortnightly collections for green refuse and general household waste.
But I now accept they were right and I was wrong. I am happy to eat humble pie – and then throw the remains in the green bin where I know it will be collected promptly on the due date. You see, our bin collections are possibly the most reliable service performed on behalf of our local councils. I cannot recall a single time when my bins have not been punctually emptied.
The fact I have two large wheelie ones bothered me at first, but now I’m in the routine, it’s easy. Neither get full, and leaving food remains for up to two weeks is no great problem.
I, for one, have no wish to pay more council tax to needlessly increase the frequency of these collections.
So when WDC and South Bucks District Council this week ruled out a return to general weekly collections, I had to say bravo.
Yes, when it comes to rubbish, our councillors sure know what they are talking about.
