LAST year some 2,000 objections were registered in opposition to a new large store planned by Waitrose for West Street in Marlow.
Planning permission was refused. In a predictable response Waitrose has resubmitted another scheme that fails to address the principal concerns raised by objectors.
Remaining unaltered are matters of size, scale and design of the store, Also unaltered are matters concerning traffic generation, parking and demolition of the existing shop including its class two listed frontage.
The plans also rely upon the acquisition of Sawyers' funeral service property against the owner's wishes by the use of compulsory purchase orders.
The prize of planning approval to Waitrose is incalculable in commercial terms, and they are clearly determined to proceed against the expressed wishes of the town.
It is obvious that their tactic is to continue in the hope that objection fatigue will set in, afflict us all, and then that we will thereby succumb to their wishes.
This is a very real danger that has to be averted.
It is not enough for us to rely upon the good offices of Sawyers, Marlow Chamber of Trade and Commerce, The Marlow Society and The Marlow Group to oppose Waitrose.
It is vital that everyone who took the trouble to register an objection to the last plans does so again, and now.
Otherwise Wycombe District Council (WDC) may well be given an excuse to submit to the pressure being exerted by Waitrose and approve a scheme that would irretrievably disfigure and damage our lovely town.
We have to persuade Wycombe District Council to refuse these applications once more, and face up to any appeal that Waitrose may choose to make.
