MEMBERS of the Probus Club heard all about the Maidenhead Citizens Advice Bureau when they met in September. As the Second World War approached it was realized that there was the need for an organisation that could advise people. In 1937 the Maidenhead branch was one of the first to be set up. With government encouragement CABs were established nationally and there are now 500 of them. They are free at the point of use and rely mainly on local authorities for their funding. Other funding is given by local charities, and also the EU for some areas of social deprivation.

There is a central organisation that sets standards and generally oversees the local organisations. Locally they have a team of volunteers who go through a year of intensive training before committing to work a set number of hours a week. Maidenhead has linguists available offering ten languages and a panel of solicitors who give free legal advice. It also offers a home visiting service for the disabled and the old.

Members found it an illuminating talk about an essential service, which most of us have never needed to use.
