ASSURANCES have been made by police that the Royal British Legion Remembrance Day parade will be able to go ahead as usual in Princes Risborough.
The annual parade in November from the Princes Risborough branch headquarters, in Bell Street, to St Mary's Church, in Church Street, had been put in doubt after the Royal British Legion received a letter from police saying they would no longer be able to marshall the event which commemorates servicemen involved in both world wars.
The letter indicated the Royal British Legion would have to provide its own street marshalls and pay for risk assessment and road closure signs before the parade could go ahead.
Joyce Berkes, the branch secretary, had said: "The police said we have got to pay for road signs. We are a charity and all our money goes to ex-servicemen and the disabled. We cannot afford this."
However, following a meeting between legion members, police and the town council, the issue has now been resolved.
Vic Heron, the Princes Risborough branch chairman, said: "We are very pleased. The police have said they will be there as usual and that it will not be a problem. The town council has said it will provide the road closure signs and some marshalls for the route. They have been a big help."
A police spokesman said: "The Princes Risborough parade will go ahead. It is a national event and the police will assist as much as reasonably possible."
He added: "Organisers of events such as these have a responsibility for the safety of those members of the public attending both as participants and spectators. All events held within the local Thames Valley Police areas will be scrutinised by the Buckinghamshire Operations Department to ensure the safety of the public is maintained. Police resources are precious and we value the assistance that event organisers can provide with planning and forethought."
Cllr Gary Hall, Princes Risborough town mayor, said: "There are a number of road closure signs in our ownership and we are going to make them available on the day of the parade."
The parade is due to take place on Sunday, November 15.
