RUNNER BEANS and potatoes were among wholesome foods collected for the elderly by pupils from Gateway School.

Pupils at the school in High Street, Great Missenden, brought in an array of food for their Harvest Festival assembly, on Friday, September 23.

Goods were packed by the school's Year Seven pupils, before they are donated to the elderly people of the village.

Cheryl Hughes, RE co-ordinator for Gateway, said: "Each year we work enthusiastically to try to bridge the age gap between our pupils and the elderly. It brings unity to our community. It's lovely."

John Martin, a Missenden representative of the charity Age Concern, gave a talk at the assembly.

Ms Hughes said: "Mr Martin told the children how each year the elderly look forward to a gift or a parcel from them because it shows that they are being thought of."
