KEEN linguists in South Bucks have the opportunity to try their hand at a new language next week British Sign Language.
Next week is Learn to Sign Week and Buckinghamshire County Council is running roadshows across the county to give people the chance to learn more about sign language.
A council spokesman said: "British Sign Language is the first or preferred language of around 70,000 deaf people in the UK.
"Sign Language has become officially recognised by the Government as an official language for the first time. British Sign Language uses hand shapes, facial expressions, lip patterns and upper body and head movement to communicate meaning."
The roadshow is appearing at Amersham District Council in King George V Road from 10am to 4pm on Monday and at The Octagon Shopping Centre in Frogmoor, High Wyco-mbe, on Friday from 10am to 4pm.
The spokesman added: "If you can't use sign language there are still ways you can help someone who is deaf to understand you. Use eye contact and keep your hands free from your mouth so that the person can see what you are saying. Speak clearly, a little slower than normal, but maintaining your normal rhythm of speech."
