Jeremy Campbell takes a look at gadgets that will do the chores for you.
These gadgets are for all those people that used to watch Tomorrow's World on television, and got disillusioned with the fact that the new millennium did not offer a new technology dawn, when we would be watching lawnmowers mow the grass, ordering robots to get us drinks and being transported millions of miles through space in the blink of an eye.
Well, maybe two out of three.
But this week's gadgets could offer hope for everyone, who thought the future would bring a life of leisure and they are all on show at the Ideal Home Show.
First, the Electrolux Automower (right) which Electrolux says is a lawnmower that fertilizes as it grazes. The Automower is designed to save time and make life easier. Once the boundaries of a lawn are set with a perimeter wire system, Automower can wander off on its own continuously munching away, rain or shine, 24 hours a day, seven days a week, recharging itself as needed. The short clippings from the Automower drop back into the lawn, helping to return moisture and nutrients to the grass.
The Automower is equipped with a navigation system to avoid obstacles and can be programmed to run continuously or only during certain times. A pin code security system deters kidnapping.
From the same stable comes another beast which does boring chores for you. Electrolux's Trilobite is the world's first automated vacuum cleaner. Electrolux says it navigates its way round the house using ultrasound. Trilobite is an advanced robot which maps the perimeter of the area to be cleaned while simultaneously removing obstacles which get in the way (including children I wonder?). Once Trilobite has finished cleaning it returns to its charging station and switches to rest mode. The Trilobite has three cleaning programmes and once charged it can run for up to an hour.
Finally, the Oculas. Makers say the Oculas is a product that gives you a place to relax and focus, a personal retreat where you can have a wide range of experiences. The Oculas incorporates surround sound, spectacular lighting via an electronic controller which controls a spectrum of hues, and a secure and comfortable experience of isolation, without claustrophobia. In addition the Oculas provides the ultimate environment for power napping and wellbeing with the latest technology in shiatsu/massage built into the design of the seat. Oculas can also provide the most intense gaming experience and a phenomenal music station which allows users to listen, watch and download music and videos.
