ONE statistic stood out at the end of Wycombe Wanderers' astonishing game against Aston Villa.

No, it wasn't the 8-3 record defeat that the national media was raving about.

It was, instead, the pathetic, embarrassing attendance of just 5,365.

Wycombe, if I recall correctly, were getting crowds of that order in the non-league more than ten years ago.

But on Tuesday, they were playing Premiership opposition in an important cup competition. Villa brought about 1,300 fans, so that left just 4,000 locals.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: High Wycombe simply does not deserve a decent football team.

The public here is far too fickle and perhaps too snobbish to lower themselves to going to see a soccer match.

Give them rugger any day and they'll turn up in their droves to see if they can spot any of their old-school tie chums, or their posh business associates.

Wasps regularly fill the same stadium even though rugby is an unintelligible and rough sport.

The public, of course, might nip out to see Wanderers on a day trip to somewhere such as Wembley or Villa Park, as they did a few years ago.

But support the football team on a regular basis? No, that's too much effort.

These type of people don't give a stuff that Wanderers have the hottest young striker in the lower leagues. Nathan Tyson could score a hundred goals a season and still they wouldn't care.

But tell them his name was Mike, instead, and he was boxing at Adams Park on Saturday and they'd turn out in their tens of thousands.

This area's so-called sports fans should be ashamed of themselves.
