A SUSPECTED jewel thief was caught and restrained with rope by passers-by during a robbery in Beaconsfield.
A gang of robbers, who tried to raid Bradley and Walker Jewellers in London End, were foiled when they were tackled by members of the public.
At around 4pm on Friday, September 9, three youths attempted to break into the shop. The men used an implement to smash the shop windows, but were disturbed by people walking past and attempted to run from the scene. One suspect was detained by a group of five or six men while two others ran down an alleyway next to London End, towards the Malt House Square.
Two of the offenders are thought to be in their late teens to early 20s, wearing jeans and dark tops with the hoods up, and are believed to have had scarves or bandannas covering their faces.
Two of the youths were black.
Det Sgt Vince Grey said: "No one was injured during this incident, as staff took cover when the window smashed. We have details of several witnesses, including those who were involved in detaining one of the offenders.
"However, I am keen to locate and talk to a builder as a witness, as he produced a length of blue rope which was used in the detention of one suspect. I am also keen to hear from anyone who may have seen the incident occurring as it is believed that some members of the public were taking photographs at the scene, and they may have evidence that could assist with this investigation.
"We want to speak to these people purely as witnesses."
Store owner Peter Bradley said his staff were trying to get back to normal and put the robbery behind them.
Witnesses should call Det Sgt Vince Grey at Amersham CID on 08458 505505 or call Crimestoppers on 0800 555111 A 16-year-old boy has been arrested on suspicion of robbery and has been released on police bail pending further enquiries.
