Recently I have become interested in learning how to fly. It’s very expensive I know, but it sounds like fun, and I could try and save up. But whilst looking at some general aviation websites, I saw something which rather horrified me.
A Swedish company called Reproba wants to buy Wycombe Air Park. But that’s not all. They want to turn it into a working passenger airport. In the same way Oxford’s airpark became London Oxford, they want to turn Wycombe’s into London Wycombe airport. They claim the aerodrome’s proximity to the M40 at junction 4 makes it an ideal location for such an enterprise.
Can Wycombe really be a home to a London airport? Reproba certainly think so. Another of their statements says that “High Wycombe is a usefully-located town near London, on the high way towards Birmingham”. They also claim that over two hundred jobs would be created.
But hang on. Where would the runway go? What about the Chilterns and the Green Belt? The Swedes have an answer for that too. “Much of the land needed is already owned by the present owners of the air park. We would just need planning permission”. Isn’t that worrying? They give no indication of terminal structure or size. They also seem to be ignoring the fact that apart from the motorway, the area has almost no other transport links. And what about the local population?!
Reproba certainly seem determined to see this through. Only time will tell us the outcome of this rather ludicrous venture. No doubt once the Bucks Free Press learns of this, they’ll be a huge story on it. Mark my words...
