THE train line at Gerrards Cross station could be reopened as soon as in two weeks time, if a report by contractors is accepted by Network Rail.
Tesco and Jackson Civil Engineering presented a detailed analysis on Monday of the cause of the tunnel collapse, which caused the closure of the track, and a plan for reopening the line to Network Rail.
Extensive site testing and analysis has taken place during the last few weeks to identify why the collapse happened, and extent of the damage.
Together with Chiltern Railways, the health and safety executive, and other relevant advisers, Network Rail will scrutinise this report before making a final decision on reopening the line.
The review is expected to take up to a week, with repair work of track and signals set to take a further week to complete if the plan is deemed satisfactory.
If the tunnel can be proved to be safe, Network Rail will complete the necessary track work to allow services to be reinstated in the week beginning August 15.
Robin Gisby, Network Rail director of operations and customer services, said: "We, and the health and safety executive, need to be one hundred per cent certain the remaining structure is safe before resuming train services through this area."
Following the collapse of the tunnel on June 30 when 5,000 tonnes of debris fell onto the line, commuter journeys have been massively disrupted as engineers and rail authorities have strived to clear the site and return it to operational use.
Tesco director Tim Mason said: "We are working hard to end the disruption for passengers as soon as possible.
"Safety of the public is our first concern and we will be guided by the safety authorities on all decisions about future work."
Tesco apologised for the serious disruption to commuters and local residents.
Mr Mason added: "We do understand the frustration and inconvenience and are providing full financial support for the compensation scheme for passengers as devised by Chiltern Railways."
Tesco say the future of the scheme at Gerrards Cross, including any decision on its completion, is dependent upon the assessment of the report.
