G8 SUMMIT IN EDINBURGH was the destination for Hannah Austin (15) who was project manager of the Aylesbury High School team from year 10 who were selected, along with seven other teams from across the country, to attend. The teams attended a reception in Edinburgh Castle and workshops and speakers on climate change.
The team called AHS8 Changing the World had submitted a communiqu containing resolutions on Africa. The school has strong connections with that country having had visits from Kenyan children.
For Hannah the highlight of her experience was the closing ceremony at the Scottish Parliament when she was given just 30 minutes to prepare a speech (which was televised) before the Lord Provost . She spoke about the way in which she had been inspired.
Hannah is a Baden Powell Guide and will shortly start work on her Queen's Award. She helps her mother Diane who is Brown Owl of 3rd Haddenham Guides.
ANDREW ROBINSON (27) started a new job in London last Monday week and was experimenting with routes to his City office. Four days later he was in the tube at Aldgate which was bombed. Andrew spoke about his experience on TV and said that he had made a decision not to get in the carriage which stopped opposite him but to walk to another a decision which saved his life. After being led out of the scene of carnage he continued his journey to work where his colleagues knew nothing of the incident.
On Monday Andrew was again on TV when he returned to work for the first time and was asked for his thoughts on returning to the city.
Along with many Haddenham commuters his journey has been made more difficult by the Gerrards Cross tunnel collapse.
HAVE YOU SEEN THE ISLAND which has appeared on Rudds Pond? It is the latest creation of our handyman Jim Ayers and is the result of much experimentation and gathering of waste materials there being no pro forma for such features.
Michael Whitney tells me that within days moorhens were using it and it was very much needed. Jim has also made a seat which he has placed near the swings at Banks Park. He tells me he has some materials for another seat but doesn't know where to put it?
