SHOPPERS in Chesham were entertained by a troop of Morris Dancers last Saturday. They were beautifully dressed in traditional costume and drew a large crowd to watch the progression of dances using swords, wooden poles and large white hankies, to the jingle of the bells wrapped around their ankles.

MEMBERS of the Youth Club were also in the Broadway selling ducks (plastic ones) at a £1 each to be entered in their annual duck race on Sunday, July 24 on the River Chess from Lords Mill.

ARE YOU TIRED of eating along? Then why not come to the Salvation Army Luncheon Club on Thursdays at 12.30pm?

ST MARY'S is our lovely parish church standing on a hill overlooking the town. Residents who can see the church from their home are reminded constantly of the church by the sound of the bells as they ring out on Sunday and Thursday evenings and on special occasions.

Evidence of a church on this site dates back to the 12th Century but the origins of the bells are less clear. Mention of five bells appeared in 1515 and was recorded again in 1714. Records made by Richard Bowle in 1606 state that two bells were recast and that all five bells were re-hung on a new frame. There is also a Sanctus bell dating from 1445 although it probably didn't arrive in Chesham until the 18th Century. This bell is chimed gently for a minute or so before all services.
