CONGRATULATIONS to all the prizewinners who collected awards on Friday at the Junior Sports Club's annual event. Olympic rower Greg Searle MBE was the special guest. Club Boy was Mark Rimmer, for the third year running, and Club Girl was Carly Selwood. Liz Hutton received the John Williams Trophy for service to club and community.
Talking after the presentation Greg Searle remembered his early days of rowing and the support he had from his family. When he was 12 years old a teacher at his school, Martin Cross, competed in the Olympics with Steve Redgrave."I think it was Steve's first Olympic appearance" Greg said.
Greg said that Olympic athletes were "ordinary people going out and performing in extraordinary ways". He encouraged everyone to "make the most of what you have" and said that he was very excited at the prospect of the London Olympics in 2012. With the rowing lake at Dorney being so close and accessible he would make sure he was involved, in some way.
Even at this early stage he suggested that people should consider volunteering to help, in whatever capacity, so that they could be part of this very special event.
TESCO COLLECTION for the RNLI was amazing with collectors outside the store in Loudwater from 6am to 10pm on both Friday and Saturday. When all the money was counted £2,345 had been raised. Ron Hill, from the Bourne End branch, said that this was a record and an outstanding achievement.
John Spokes, who organised the collection and collectors, was delighted and thanked Tesco for granting permission to the RNLI. John also thanked the large group of people who gave their time to ensure that there were collectors on hand for the longest possible time.
