POPULAR headteacher Frances Henson has left a leading High Wycombe preparatory school after more than 14 years at the helm.

In a statement to parents, governors at Godstowe Preparatory School said that Frances Henson had left to "pursue other ventures".

Michael Tebbot, chairman of the school council, said he was unable to discuss the matter in detail because of ongoing contractual arrangements.

He also assured parents that the school remained solvent, adding: "Be assured that at an appropriate time the school will publicly acknowledge Mrs Henson's achievement of the last 14 years in enhancing our reputation as one of the country's leading preparatory boarding schools.

"The school is solvent.

"It has the financial resources to ensure that we are able to attract and retain high calibre staff."

The school council confirmed that it had started searching for a suitable replacement.

But in the meantime it is understood that deputy headteacher Simon Collins will take up the post of acting head.

A new head will take up the post sometime in 2006.

Mr Tebbot added: "In the meantime, the council will ensure that the needs of all the children at whatever stage in their schooling are met.

"Throughout the summer, members of council and senior staff will be available to discuss any individual concerns.

"The council and the senior management team are committed to continuing to improve the lines of communication between the school and parents and its other major stakeholders."
