ROAD safety bosses still refuse to reveal how much cash is being coined by a controversial speed camera governing Marlow Hill, even though the matter was raised in the House of Lords.

Baroness Gardner of Parkes raised the issue at Westminster on Wednesday, June 29, questioning the secrecy surrounding mobile camera 265.

But fresh attempts by the Free Press to publish details of High Wycombe's most unwelcome visitor continue to be thwarted by the Thames Valley Safer Roads Partnership (TVSRP).

The Baroness told peers during a heated debate: "Camera 265 on Marlow Hill, has been the subject of three major articles in the local press about this unsatisfactory site on an uphill carriageway.

"The Thames Valley Safer Roads Partnership has, claiming an exemption under the Freedom of Information Act, refused to respond to press requests for figures of amount of revenue raised and number of fines issued.

"Surely rather than this being secret it should be public information."

Dozens of concerned motorists have contacted the Free Press to complain, yet TVSRP remains tight-lipped, claiming to reveal such information would compromise the operational effectiveness of the site.

Dan Campsall, of TVSRP, said: "The decision we have taken is the decision that is in line with all 42 police forces nationwide, not to release site by site information.

"That decision was one we suggested to the information commissioner, that we felt was appropriate. The commissioner upheld that, and said it was for the protection and prevention of crime.

"We are happy with that even if it's been debated by the Baroness (Gardner) in the Lords."

Ironically the comments came days after Avon and Somerset Safety Partnership released figures relating to controversial cameras monitoring traffic along a section of the M4.

Bosses in the South West made the "exceptional decision" to alert drivers to the cameras, which have caught 20,000 drivers and raked in £1.2million in fines since early May.

The Free Press first applied for the data in April, under the Freedom of Information Act. The move followed calls from motorists who felt the site was being used solely to generate revenue.
