A PUB landlord is bitterly disappointed that Chiltern District Council severely restricted his controversial bid to stay open until the early hours.

But residents have backed the council's decision not to grant Michael Adamson, landlord of the Pineapple pub, on White Lion Road, Chesham, a licence to stay open until 2am everyday except Sundays.

However, the Pineapple boss has been awarded a licence to stay open until 12.30am on Friday and Saturday nights, and until 1.30am at Easter. This comes into effect on November 24.

The licensing sub-committee of the council took five days to reach the decision which was announced on Tuesday. The pub must also comply with a number of conditions.

Landlord Mr Adamson believes the decision of the council will prevent him from catering for different markets.

He said: "It's not good at all. I do not think they have compromised and I don't think they have been very democratic in weighing up the opposition and the case that I have put forward."

However, residents near the pub rejoiced at the news. Clive Symes, who lives on White Lion Road, organised a petition against the plans.

He said: "I'm so pleased that local democracy appears to have worked. There was a tremendous strength of feeling from residents around the pub."

The council has ordered the pub to comply with a 30-minute "drinking up" time rule which prohibits the sale of alcohol half an hour before closing time.

The Pineapple must also employ a doorman after 11pm, install CCTV cameras and keep noise to a minimum. A sign must also be erected outside the pub telling drivers not to beep horns.

Mr Adamson has not yet decided if he will appeal against the decision.

He added: "I am disappointed with the council's decision." He added he would consult his lawyers before making a decision.
