AN elderly couple living on a dangerous stretch of road say they have had to become a "first aid station" to cope with accidents after a teenage driver died at the scene at the weekend.

Clifford and Edith Sadler say they have regularly given help to motorists involved in accidents on the Valley Road, Hughenden, and the telegraph pole outside their house has already been knocked down three times this year.

Eighteen-year-old Liam Logue of Ashley Drive, Tylers Green, died on Sunday when his blue Rover Metro was involved in a crash with a blue Vectra. Police say the Metro crossed the road into the path of the oncoming Vectra.

Mrs Sadler said: "It's getting very traumatic. People say to us they don't know how we can live here.

"We have had people in the house with bleeding wounds and we have had to pull people out of the stream."

Joe Gordon, of Stocklands Way, Prestwood, drove past the scene of the latest crash on Sunday night and stopped to help.

He said: "The car was almost cut in two. It was pretty bad."

Mr Logue is the fourth person to die on the same stretch between the Hamilton Road junction and Cryers Hill roundabout within the last five years.

Ian McGowan, team leader for Collision Investigation and Analysis/Local Safety Schemes at Bucks County Council said plans are underway to improve the safety of the road.

He said: "The proposals for this length of road have been developed over a number of months to try to reduce the number and severity of casualties occurring."

These measures include the removal of trees and reducing the speed limit from the national which is 60mph, to 50mph in some sections and 40mph in others.

Hughenden Residents' Association have continually lobbied Bucks County Council for road safety measures after the deaths of pensioners Bernard and Vera Poole on the same length of road two years ago.

Paul Cawte, chairman of the group, is glad the council are now acting.

He said: "It is tragic there has been another death on the road but we are pleased the council has acknowledged the problem and is now working on a solution."

Anyone who may have seen the crash or either of the two vehicles travelling on the road prior to the incident is urged to contact PC Andy Martin at Amersham Roads Policing department on 0845 8 505 505.
