TWO men were seriously injured by a driver who mowed down four victims.

Eyewitnesses said a man drove the wrong way down the one-way system behind Tesco's store in High Wycombe, before knocking the four over.

One of the men was carried on the roof of the car and was thrown into the road, behind the Tesco store.

Three of the men, who are said to be brothers, were left laying in the street after being hit, following the incident shortly before 7pm on Wednesday.

Police say a 22-year-old suffered head injuries and is in a critical condition. A 45-year-old suffered injuries to his back, leg and arm and is said to be stable.

Two men in their 30s suffered minor injuries, but have since been discharged from hospital.

One of the men is believed to be a taxi driver who works at the nearby pick-up point, of the bus station. All the victims are Asian men.

Two ambulances were on the scene within minutes and treated the men on the road. Before the crews arrived, several members of the public had come to the aid with one holding a cloth to a victim's heads in an attempt to stem the blood.

A large crowd of Asians had gathered at the scene, and at one point police had to break up a fight between them. Before the incident, police told how there had been a fight between a group of Asian men in the road with metal bars, leaving trails of blood next to the Newland Island car park.

Cllr Chaudhry Allah-Ditta visited Wycombe Hospital on Wednesday night following the incident.

He said: "Generally I am very concerned. We have to find a way of lowering these tensions somehow."

An officer at the scene said: "There was a dispute between a group of Asian males involving weapons. We don't know what about. We're not talking about firearms, just metal bars.

"Subsequent to the assault a vehicle drove through a number of people who were up-ended and injured."

A police spokesman said the car was driven at a number of men and it was an isolated domestic incident.

A man on his way to Tesco told how a driver hurtled past him with a shattered windscreen.

A 25-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and grievous bodily harm.
