A RANGE Rover containing a family of five overturned on the M40 causing miles of tailbacks.
The accident took place between junction four and five of the motorway, just after midday on Sunday.
Police said a 43-year-old female driver of the car had to be airlifted to the John Radcliffe hospital in Oxford, after the accident, where she was being treated for head injuries.
Her husband and children sustained minor injuries and were taken to Wycombe Hospital.
Two of the children were kept in hospital overnight, but doctors say it was only as a precautionary measure.
Two lanes of the motorway were closed for three hours.
Tailbacks stretched back on the motorway for about four miles.
Two fire engines, four ambulances, and six police cars rushed to the scene.
Fire services received a call that the occupants were trapped inside the car, but they had all been released from the vehicle by the time that they arrived.
The family, from Great Haseley, in Oxfordshire, were travelling towards High Wycombe when their off-roader overturned.
Police believe that another car may have been involved, but are sure that there was no actual contact.
Eye witnesses on the scene reported that a silver Jeep Cherokee was involved in the accident.
