THE GOLDEN age of steam will be making a comeback in Beaconsfield when a vintage engine pulls into the town's station on July 2.

The Green Train, famous in railway circles, will be stopping to pick up fans of steam and giving trainspotters from across the county the chance to make a note of a classic.

The train, hauled by the King Edward I engine, is stopping off on its journey towards Warwick and Stratford-upon-Avon.

This is the third year a vintage steam train has pulled into Beaconsfield Station, as part of day trips organised by Steam Dreams.

Judy Brierley, who helped organised the event, said: "This is the first time that we have used this locomotive at Beaconsfield and it is sure to attract lots of interest.

"King Edward I was built in 1930 in Swindon and in 2004 it returned to mainline service after its second major overhaul."

Marcus Robertson, chairman of Steam Dreams, is expecting the platform to be packed with people wanting to relive steam travel.

He said: "In my opinion, this is a great chance to hark back to the memorable golden days of steam travel.

"Nothing can beat the sights, sounds and smells of a steam train as it thunders across the country at speeds of up to 75mph."

The train is due to arrive at 10.30am on Saturday, July 2.
