SAFETY conscious pupils at a school in Bourne End have challenged Buckinghamshire County Council to show them the money as they bid to raise cash for two new school crossings.

Pupils from Claytons County Combined School are holding a concert outside Cliftons toy shop in The Parade from 2.45pm on Friday, June 24, to raise money for a school crossing in Blind Lane and Marlow Road.

The county council has asked the school to prove its commitment to the proposed crossings by helping to raise funds.

The crossing will be used by the 170 pupils who walk to school in a bid to improve safety.

So far Claytons has raised £880 for the project and Ulrike Wood, chairman of the school transport steering group, is calling for the same demonstration of commitment from the council.

She said: "The council has told us the more money we can raise the better, because it shows how much we want these crossings. The council said it will contribute, but it can't say how much until it has carried out a feasibility study, which it promised us three weeks ago."

The school said parents were reluctant to allow their children to walk to school because of the lack of a safe crossing point near the school entrance in Wendover Road.

However, a council highways spokesman told the Free Press: "Claytons crossings is a high priority. We are just waiting for our contractors to carry out a feasibility study and the funding is available."
