CRITICISM is growing over a recycling scheme rolled out to 12,000 homes across Wycombe district last month.
Wycombe District Council's "Grow" scheme was originally introduced to 4,000 homes in Bourne End last July, to help it meet the statutory target for recycling and composting of 30 per cent of waste by 2006.
But fortnightly collections, stinking bins and a forced reduction in home waste have become a cause for concern among some homeowners.
Jackie Dwyer, of Inkerman Drive, in Hazlemere, said: "I already recycle my bottles and paper and I still need my grey bin emptied once a week.
"It would seem to me the council is trying to pull the wool over our eyes in reaching the environmental targets they have to meet."
While some residents welcome the opportunity to recycle, reservations remain over how the current scheme has been structured.
Nicky Oliver, of Watchet Lane, Holmer Green, added: "Not only is the green bin sat there festering for two weeks, but the grey household waste one is as well. What happens if you've got a big family like I have? They're asking us to change our entire lifestyle."
Yet despite criticism, the district council remains upbeat over the scheme. A spokesman said: "The new fortnightly collection will take time to bed in.
"Our Grow campaign is aimed at getting people to effectively sort their waste."
