EX-RSM NORMAN ALLEN who saw and went into action at the famous Sword Beach on D Day has now turned his hand to raising money for charity. Over several weekends he has been selling plants at 274 Totteridge Road. He has asked me to thank everyone who came along and supported his sales. Money raised has gone to St Dunstans and he has been able to send over £1,000 to help ex-servicemen.
NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH meeting at Godstowe School was particularity interesting, ably chaired by Cllr Val Letheren. Two scene of crime officers, Clare Houston and Lisa Warwick, explained their work at crime scenes. We heard from Police Sergeant Dick Beard and Police Community Support Officer Gavin Jones. Then Nigel Osborne from the Crown Prosecution Service gave a talk on the function and operation of the service. Thanks to Geoff Pegg, the chairman of the Wycombe District NHW Association, who arranges these meetings IF BEE-KEEPING INTERESTS YOU then the Environmental Centre is the place to learn more. SOME WEEKS AGO I was lucky enough to attend the concert by the Orpheus Male Voice Choir at the Wycombe Swan. I see from Community News that they had another concert last Saturday in Holmer Green and there's another planned for Bourne End. After the concert these were my my thoughts on the evening: No matter how many times I go to watch and listen to this magical choir I always know that I am in for a treat, especially with the stage bedecked with flowers courtesy of Slough Nurseries. From the minute the curtain went up until the final curtain, all of us enjoyed a musical extravaganza. A Cole Porter medley started the show then Timothy Bartram thrilled everyone with his violin playing. He was accompanied by Marissa Thornton-Wood.
The choir then gave us "Lazy Bones" in a laid back manner which had the audience in stitches. The delight up to the interval with "A Smuggler's Sons", "True Love", and "Ride the Chariot" with a solo from choir member Peter Gibbons.
Musical Director, Louise Langley (not long out of hospital), was superb with an unmistakable style. I particularly enjoyed her rapport with the pianist Edward McCall. Finally I must say how much compere Norman Donkin brings to the performance.
High Wycombe should be proud of its very own Orpheus Male Voice Choir and I recommend one of their concerts to all music lovers. It's a treat.
