AT THE JUNE WI MEETING last week Audrey Burgoyn asked members to remember two members who had died recently. Myna Williams was a staunch member who regularly offered to assist with WI projects. She was also a member of the Darby and Joan Club and regularly helped with the County First School's reading scheme. Winnie Rooke, who died at the age of 100, always had an apt observation on talks and she would often bring along appropriate artefacts and poems which she had written.
Mrs Burgoyne also recalled the generosity of Sir Denis Wright who died in May. Twice he invited WI members to St Paul's Cathedral for services of Commemoration and Dedication for the Order of St Michael and St George. On one such occasion the Queen was present. Audrey said it was an unforgettable experience. WI members attended all three funerals. PHOTOGRAPHIC EXHIBITION on the subject of "A Garden and Three Houses" is at the museum. It features architect Peter Aldington's three houses which he designed and built in Haddenham in the 60s and which are now listed. It is an internationally acclaimed scheme. There is also an architect's model and artefacts from the house including Bernard Leach pottery. The exhibition is supported by trustees and patrons of the Turn End Charitable Trust.
I'VE BEEN GIVEN good news about fundraising in the village. Christian Aid raised £755 at their May Fair and on the same day the Conservatives took £600 at their jumble sale - now the only one held in the village. Year Two pupils at St Mary's served coffee and cakes to parents and friends and raised £215 and now they will decide how to spend the money for the benefit of the school. A book sale on the same day was well supported and the school now has £160 to spend on books. Linda Bamford who runs the Red Cross Day Centre was delighted with the £493 raised at their coffee morning which will be spent on entertainment for clients.
