THE CIRCUS IS COMING to town. Well, Disraeli School, actually. Don't forget tomorrow's grand summer fete starts at 11.30am in the school grounds. TV presenter Lorraine Kelly is expected to be there for the opening. All the fun of a traditional school fete to be followed by the excitement of a "Happy Circus" with professional clowns, escapologist, puppets, ariel acts and the Zig Zag Lady. The Big Top will open its canvas doors at 1.30pm in time for the performance at 2pm. Tickets will be on sale today at the school gates between 3pm and 3.30pm or buy them tomorrow at just £5 each, £18 for a family of four. All proceeds are being shared by the parent associations of Disraeli School and Maplewood.

DOWNLEY GARDENERS have been preparing for your visit on Sunday. There are eight local gardens being opened from 2pm to 6pm (not 2.30pm as on the boards). Entry tickets are £3 per person, under 14's free, and maps can be purchased from the War Memorial hall in the High Street where delicious refreshments will be served to keep up your stamina.

It's a great way to see which plants thrive in our local area, glean tips from the householder and enjoy pleasant green-fingered chit chat.

HUGHENDEN MANOR will move back to the 1940's this weekend from midday. Take a trip down memory lane, or find out how life was lived during the austerity of the war years. There will be representatives from the Home Guard, Land Army and NAAFI to demonstrate how the civilian population managed to keep going during the war years. It has been rumoured that Corned Beef Hash is appearing on the Stables Restaurant menu.

DOWNLEY DAY looms ever closer. In case you have been away, this is happening on Saturday, June 18, on the common from 2pm to 5pm. Entries are requested for the dog show, all types and breeds welcome the winner will be judged on personality and charisma rather than looks alone. Tickets for the Friday night children's disco from 7pm to 9pm, cost £2, including a drink and packet of crisps. They can be purchased on the night. A great evening is in store with lots of games and music.
