MAJOR disruption to Princes Risborough town centre could be on the cards after it was revealed Buckinghamshire County Council plan to carry out maintenance work along High Street.

The work to replace the gravel asphalt sections on the pavements will take two weeks, and is planned to take place within the next few months.

There are also plans for a one-way system implemented to ease congestion during the work.

Although the council say no date has yet been set for the refurbishment, it is thought the work will be carried out sometime in early September.

Dennis Green, county councillor for the Risboroughs, has expressed concern at the impact the work will have on businesses.

He said: "There is going to be quite a lot of disruption and of course that would clash with markets on Thursdays."

However, Ian Reed, Bucks County Council local area coordinator, said the work was scheduled to cause the least possible interference.

Mr Reed said: "The only thing that might be affected is the weekly farmers' market (on Thursdays). Final details haven't been sorted out and we will be meeting with Cllr Green to discuss it."

The asphalt sections are to be removed and replaced with a black tarmac substance at a cost of about £20,000.

Businesses along High Street have reacted to the news with mixed emotions.

Ann Evans, from Kado, said: "I hope it doesn't effect trade, but we already have problems with traffic as it is.

"There was talk of making it a one-way system so perhaps this will act as a trial run."

Barry Clark, from the butchers shop JH Clark and Sons, admitted the pavements need replacing.

He said: "The pavements need refurbishing and we hope the disruption is kept to a minimum for the benefit of our customers."
