RESIDENTS have backed plans to convert Chesham's only nightclub into a caf bar and flats.
Neighbours of Stage 2 Night Club, Station Road, say vandalism has significantly reduced since the club shut in December, Thursday's meeting of Chiltern District Council heard.
Applicant Anthony Kelly asked the planning committee to consider the benefits to the town from the club's permanent closure. And residents and businesses have written letters of support for the proposed change of use to provide nine flats and a second-floor caf bar.
Letters stated that: "We will not miss the noise and mess. It gave shopkeepers nothing but trouble and we will be happy to see it closed."
Cllr Patricia Lindsley (Lib Dem, Vale) added: "Those who live outside the club told me that petty vandalism to hedges, fences and litter has decreased since the closure of the nightclub."
Councillors agreed that an alternative club site was unlikely to be found and in 18 months no offers had been made to buy or run it as a nightclub.
Only Cllr Jane Bramwell (Lib Dem, St Mary's and Waterside) objected to the proposal on the basis that she did not want to see Chesham "become a community of lots of small flats with nowhere to go and nothing to do".
Councillors deferred the decision until the next planning meeting. Mr Kelly said that he was pleased and he will adjust plans to include eight flats and bicycle storage area as recommended.
