YET again speed cameras are attracting more headlines While they may be seen as a tax raising scheme by some, I do believe they are a very blunt instrument against most law abiding citizens.
They do nothing to stop unlicensed, uninsured vehicles on the road nor stop dangerous driving which seems to be on the increase.
Indeed, I once met a car late at night being driven the wrong way down the M40.
The car had missed the exit at Handy Cross and had turned round.
I reported it to the police as I had the registration number and they said they would trace the vehicle and come and take a statement.
No prizes for guessing what happened.
Nothing.
But I am now of the opinion that having all these mobile and fixed speed cameras about, Thames Valley Safer Roads Partnership are creating a dangerous situation.
I now find myself so concentrating on my speed in case a speed camera is just around the corner, and that my situational awareness of the road and traffic conditions around me has been severely reduced.
Hence, I believe that this has led to me having a higher risk of an accident.
Indeed, every time I pass a fixed camera by the road verge I am checking my rear view mirror to see if it flashes as I have no faith it their calibration.
To date, despite passing many fixed and mobile cameras, I have not received a speeding fine but I only feel it is a matter of time.
So Thames Valley Safer Roads Partnership it is time to review all these cameras and start to look at the general picture on road safety.
