Lee, one of Wycombe's highest-achieving managers, took over in mid-December. He was coach for the Oxford University Football Team and manager of Bisham Abbey National Sports Centre at the time.
By the end of the season Lee had lost just two games from 15 and Wycombe had clawed its way up to fourth place in the Isthmian league. The following season he had a run of 30 unbeaten matches and the team finished second.
They finally won the league in 1970/1 and in the following three seasons. They came in second in 1975/6. It was an outstanding spell of league results. Lee also led the club to victory in the Berks & Bucks Senior Cup in 1972/3 and 1973/4 and in the Anglo-Italian Trophy in 1975/6.
One of the most memorable games under Lee's leadership was the FA Amateur Cup third round tie against Jack Charlton's Middlesborough at Loakes Park on January 4, 1975. Boro' were second placed in the Football League's first division at the time but the Blues managed to hold them a 0-0 draw. Another fine performance in the re-play at 'Boro saw Chalton's team struggle to gain a 1-0 victory. Lee resigned at the end of the 1975/6 season because his job at Bisham Abbey was taking up more of his time. He recommended his successor Ted Powell.
