MORE than 300 people pulled on their Wellies to take a walk in the wood they will lose if it is sold to a developer.
The Woodland Trust together with Friends of Penn Wood, organised the guided walk on Saturday morning.
The 432-acre ancient Penn Wood, between Penn Street and Penn Bottom Road, was due to be turned into a golf course after it was sold to a private developer in 1990.
Residents in Penn strongly objected to the plan and, after a lengthy campaign, the owners of the land, GBS Estates, put Penn Wood on the market before Christmas.
The Woodland Trust has also launched an appeal, which is being backed by broadcaster Jonathan Dimbleby, to raise money to buy the land and preserve the wood. The trust needs to raise £200,000.
