Councillor hassled for TV licence
DEPUTY Mayor Adam Gielgud says he has been hounded for a TV licence - despite having no television.
The Labour Wycombe district councillor has received several letters telling him he must get a licence, but has written back to the licensing authority explaining: "Sorry chum - we don't have a TV."
Cllr Gielgud, of Amersham Hill, High Wycombe, explained: "My stepson moved out of the house in January and he took his TV and licence with him."
The licensing authorities even sent an inspector to the house in March.
Cllr Gielgud said: "A man did call on us, and my wife said he could come in and look around to prove we had no television, but he declined to do so, which makes a nonsense of the whole thing really."
Cllr Gielgud told Midweek he did not need to have television at home.
He explained: "If I want access to a television set I can get it, but I don't watch much because I'm too busy and I don't like a lot of what's on. TV in Europe is much better than the stuff here."
A spokesman for TV Licensing said: "There's a slip on the licence request form which you can fill in to say you no longer have a television."
The spokesman added: "The inspector doubtless took Mrs Gielgud at her word when she said she didn't have a TV."
