TWO of the most powerful men in the world were in Bucks on Tuesday to relax after the G8 summit.

Tony Blair and Bill Clinton played five holes at Ellesborough Golf Club. Members reported that Bill Clinton gave his novice opponent useful tips on how to tee off and hit the ball down the middle of the fairway.

Club general manager Peter Yorke said: "I got a call from Chequers saying that two important people wanted to play. I later found out that it was Bill Clinton and Tony Blair. I arrived at Chequers at 6am and sat in the President's limousine with Mr Clinton. We talked about the golf and the weather.

"Tony Blair appeared soon after Mr Clinton had eaten a raisin bagel and drank black coffee."

The three men then drove one-and-a-half miles to the course and played five holes.

Mr Yorke added: "Mr Blair told me that he had never played golf before, but he was quite good for a novice."

The exclusive club is situated near Chequers and has 750 members who pay an annual fee of £500. The club has a year's waiting list to join.

The 98-year-old golf club offers all Prime Ministers honorary membership. The last Prime Minister to play at the course regularly was Harold Wilson, although Denis Thatcher was a keen player.

Mr Yorke said he was still trying to come to terms with the momentous round.

He said: "I'm planning to frame a photograph of myself with the two leaders and display it on the clubhouse wall."
