CAMPAIGNERS for a quieter Marlow by-pass were optimistic this week, following news that the noisiest roads in the country will be resurfaced urgently.

For over eight years the Marlow Society and a small team of supporters have campaigned to reduce the ever-increasing noise pollution caused by one of the busiest roads in South Bucks.

Michael Hyde, vice chairman of the society, said: 'The announcement has been music to residents' deafened ears.

'In recent years the volume of traffic and noise has increased beyond our wildest dreams - or nightmares.

'Now at least it appears the financial resources will be available.'

Since the announcement, the society has written to Tony Blair and John Prescott, Secretary of State for Transport, seeking their support in the resurfacing of the A404, a well-used link between the M40 and M4 motorways.

Mr Hyde added: 'We hope it can be dealt with well within the five-year programme currently promoted by the Highways Agency.'

A spokesman for Bucks County Council, which is responsible for road maintenance, said: 'We will await the outcome as to what this means for Bucks. Hopefully it will reduce noise levels on our local roads.'
