A SMASH which left two people in hospital has perplexed police after a car lost control on a straight stretch of road.

A 20-year-old woman was driving a Vauxhall Tigra along Burroughs Grove Hill, Marlow Bottom, and police believe that she then lost control and went into the path of a Toyota before hitting the verge.

Both drivers were taken to Wycombe Hospital where they were still recovering on Tuesday. The driver of the black Tigra, from Hazlemere, suffered pelvic injuries. The injuries suffered by the Toyota driver, a woman in her mid 30s from High Wycombe, were believed not to be life threatening.

The collision took place outside the Three Horseshoes pub at around 9am last Friday.

Landlord John Crompton, who opened up to serve hot drinks to rescuers, said: 'We heard a bang and thought it was a door slamming shut downstairs.

'It wasn't until we looked out of the window and saw the queue of traffic that we realised what had happened.

'We opened up as soon as possible and served up hot drinks to those involved, as anybody would do.'

PC Daniel Hall of Amersham Traffic Police, said: 'It's a bit of a mystery.

'The Tigra lost control and went into the path of the Toyota and careered into the verge.

'We can't see why she lost control of the car.

'It was wet, but it is a very straight bit of road.'

Police are appealing for any witnesses. Anyone with information should contact PC Hall at Amersham Traffic Base on (01494) 465888
