I WISH to support the sane and informative letter from N S Benyon (September 15 - 'High fuel costs are necessary'). The fuel crisis seems to have produced a conspiracy of silence on the key subject of global warming, by politicians of all of all parties, sustained by most press, TV and radio, and backed, naturally, by the oil companies.
Every driver knows there's instant trouble if a vehicle's cooling system fails, because engines generate so much heat. At the same time, they add to the world's cosy blanket of CO2. No wonder land, sea and air are all warming up rapidly.
The so-called taxpayers' revolt here and across Europe has pressured Opec to increase oil output. This is the last thing our poor sweltering planet needs.
Of course farmers and hauliers need some special consideration, but ways must be developed for us all to use less fossil fuel.
Your readers may be interested to know that John Laing (who owns Chiltern Railways) has teamed up with Swiss Railways to not only bring the famous Swiss Rail high performance to Chiltern Railways, but also to develop a fully integrated public transport network - trains, light rail, buses, taxis and cycling - to a region extending from Birmingham to the south coast and to the west country, and from London to the Cotswolds and South Wales. That could help us all to cut down on our transport CO2 emissions, but the oil companies might not be very pleased.
