JERMAINE McSporran and Jamie Bates could be heading for a place in the Guinness Book of Records after their goal rush against Peterborough United.

JERMAINE McSporran and Jamie Bates could be heading for a place in the Guinness Book of Records after their goal rush against Peterborough United.

They scored within nine seconds of each other either side of half time to sink Boro and now history-makers at Guinness are checking to see if that's a record.

A spokesman for the book said: 'We're looking into it. It could be a record on two counts. Firstly for the amount of time between the goals and secondly because no Peterborough player touched the ball in between.'

Bates scored with the last kick of the first half and then, straight from Wycombe's kick off for the second half, Jermaine McSporran dribbled through the defence to score again without an opponent touching the ball.

Wanderers boss Lawrie Sanchez, who was still in the dressing room when, McSporran scored said: 'It must be a record for time between goals. I've seen it on video and it was a world-class effort.'

Boro boss Fry said: 'From their point of view it was a wonderful goal but from our point of view it was an absolute disgrace. The geezer went through eight of our players, who just stood and watched him.'

Now Guinness record makers are checking the facts. Wanderers have been asked to supply a video of the match and referee John Brandwood will be asked to file a report. Other witness statements will also be taken before it can be confirmed as a record.

McSporran is excited about the prospect of joining the biggest, the fastest and the fattest in one of the most famous books in the world.

He said: 'I didn't ever expect to see my name in the Guinness Book of Records. If it does go in as a record that really would be something for me and Batesy to be proud of.

'There are many unbelievable records in there and if I could be among them it would be a great achievement.'

The potentially record-breaking goal, in the 2-0 win, came straight from the training ground. Blues tried it against Oxford last season and it almost came off but it worked perfectly on Saturday.

McSporran said: 'We've tried it a few times. As I was running through I just thought I've got to get a shot off. It's probably the most unusual goal I've scored.'

Up until Wanderers quick double blast it had been even stevens between the two sides.

Peterborough bossed the first 20 minutes before Wanderers ground them down before unloading the double blow.

It began when John Cullen fouled Steve Brown on the edge of the area and Bates blasted the free-kick right-footed through a massive gap in the defensive wall.

There wasn't time for Peterborough to restart the match and there wasn't time to blink as Wanderers kicked off the second half. The ball was played to McSporran who ripped through the defence before planting his shot right-footed beyond Mark Tyler.
