CAMPAIGNERS fighting the possible closure of a major breast care screening unit are still waiting for a decision on whether the Wycombe service will be axed.

Health chiefs have still not given an answer as to which breast screening unit will face closure in Buckinghamshire, despite a meeting being called on Wednesday following a public consultation costing more than £2,000.

Supporters of the Free Press campaign, Save Our Screening, crowded into the Buckinghamshire NHS Health Authority meeting this week awaiting the outcome of a public consultation on plans to close one or two of the current breast screening units at Wycombe Hospital, Aylesbury and Milton Keynes.

Pam Kemp, business manager superintendent radiographer at the Wycombe unit, said after the meeting that she and staff at the unit were disappointed. She said: 'There is no timetable to say when we will find out which unit will be closed and staff are feeling very demoralised because they do not know what will happen.'

Jean Martin, who has suffered from two different kinds of breast cancer, said the unit helped to save her life.

'If the unit closes it will be a disaster for women in Bucks but now we still have the threat looming over us.'

One reason for a delay in the decision was concern over poor public transport links to take people from Milton Keynes to Aylesbury, if the unit in the former closed. The health authority will look at the links between Milton Keynes General Hospital and Northampton General Hospital.
