CHARTERED accountant Karen Bartlett is warning businesses to ensure their websites don't land them in hot water with the Inland Revenue.

Karen, a partner in the High Wycombe office of chartered accountants Saffery Champness, said: "People need to ensure the facts they present on the website accord with those they are returning to the Inland Revenue and Companies House.

"With the internet we would urge people to remember that, by posting personal information, they are virtually inviting complete strangers into their lives and their financial affairs."

She added that tax inspectors, for instance, are perfectly within their rights to check out sites and if they find any information on there which they don't already know about, the site owners could be in trouble with the Inland Revenue.

A spokesman from the Inland Revenue confirmed it used a variety of information from different sources if it is considering an investigation.
