February 16, 2001 9:29: TIME is standing still in Chesham after the town clock suddenly stopped at the weekend.
Residents could be forgiven for thinking they had been trapped in some kind of Buckinghamshire twilight zone as they travelled to work on Monday morning and saw the clock hands pointing to 11.18.
Eagle-eyed Mike Kennedy, Chesham Town Council Clerk, spotted the frozen clock hands, in the High Street, as he jogged to work.
He said: "I just saw the hands on 11.18 and thought 'that's not right'. I should think the clock froze on Friday or Saturday but at least it tells the right time twice a day."
He said the clock, which was restored in 1992, had originally been opened with a massive ceremony, but had stopped ticking back then after only a few hours.
