February 16, 2001 9:53: RESIDENTS in Cookham and Bisham are being given a say on how their council should be run in the future as the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead faces its biggest ever shake-up.
A total of 58,000 leaflets entitled 'Your Council Your Choice' have been dropped across the Royal Borough giving voters three options.
Each one is aimed at modernising the way the council operates and offers a radical departure from the old committee system of decision making, now on its way out nationally.
The three options, all of which retain a ceremonial mayor, are:
A cabinet of councillors with a council leader
A directly elected mayor and a cabinet of councillors
A directly elected mayor and an appointed council manager
The Royal Borough has been piloting the cabinet/council leader option since the election last May with three of the top posts taken by Cookham residents.
Cllr Michael Lawrence, council leader, Cllr Tom Denniford, lead member for planning and Cllr Alan Jay, member for IT, are all Conservatives and all represent the Bisham and Cookham ward for the Royal Borough.
Cllr Lawrence said: "We need the views of our local community to help us make the choice about the one that is best for the Royal Borough."
The consultation period lasts until March 16 and will help the council make its decision.
Additional copies of the leaflet are available from the Town Hall in Maidenhead, in local libraries or by calling (01628) 796410
