February 19, 2001 11:07: A MAN is planning to swim 23 miles the length of the Loch Ness to raise money for a church project.
But Gordon Lawson, of Stokes Croft, Haddenham, will be nowhere near Scotland, instead doing the gruelling swim at Princes Risborough's swimming pool, Lower Icknield Way, Longwick.
The swim is the equivalent to 1,472 lengths in total which he needs to complete before May to raise cash for St Mary's Church Millennium Tower Development Project.
Mr Lawson said: "I wanted to get fit but needed an incentive to encourage me and the Loch Ness challenge seemed like a good idea."
St Mary's Church, in Haddenham, launched a £120,000 appeal in September to convert its tower into much needed toilet, kitchen and creche facilities, to improve disabled access and to carry out a number of other improvements to the building.
The appeal committee has so far received pledges and donations that should enable the first phase of the development to proceed. Work on the tower development should begin in the next few months.
